The post The Do’s & Don’ts of Online Shopping appeared first on Cutting Edge Bank Card Services, Inc..

We all love online shopping. Online shopping is great. It has revolutionized the way our modern society shops and it is becoming increasingly more popular as time goes on. It’s convenient, it’s easy, and you can do it from pretty much anywhere! While we love online shopping just as much as the next person, we also know how important it is to be conscious of where you are putting your credit card information. While online shopping is on the rise, credit card information and identity theft is on the rise as well. It is important that you are aware of how to protect yourself and your information when it comes to online shopping. Here are a few do’s and a few don’ts of online shopping.

Here are a few things that we recommend that you do when participating in online shopping.

  • Only buy from websites that request the 3-digit security code
    • This ensures that that the card is in your possession during the time of the transaction.
  • Get a virtual credit card number
    • A virtual, or disposable, credit card number is a number that is attached to your credit card but only available for a one-time use. This way, if a scammer comes across your disposable credit card number they are unable to use it because it is no longer valid. Talk to your credit card issuer about how to get a virtual credit card number.
  • Only visit websites that are secure and start with https://
    • https:// means that a website is secure and using SSL which means that your information is being encrypted. If a website does not have https:// we do not recommend using the website to make purchases.
  • Use credit cards that are committed to keeping your information safe
    • Make sure that your credit card company is on your team when it comes to credit card fraud. Read reviews on the company before committing to a contract.
  • Pay attention to when you are typing in the URL
    • A lot of scammers create fake websites that are similar to real ones in order to get credit card information. Pay close attention to the URL and make sure that it is the correct one. If the website looks a little sketchy, it probably isn’t the one you are looking for.
  • Be aware of your surroundings
    • Think about the way that you protect yourself when you’re getting money out of the ATM machine or inputting your pin at the store. You should use the same precautions when you are buying online. Make sure that you are by yourself and there is no one that could potentially get a hold of your credit card information.
  • Review your bank statement every month
    • Thoroughly review your bank statement to make sure that all of the purchases you made were made by you. The faster you’re able to recognize fraud on your statement the faster your credit card company will be able to take care of it. You should also regularly monitor your credit score. If you notice that your score tanks without any reasonable cause, you may want to investigate that. Sometimes scammers are after your identity and not just your money.
  • Make sure your computer is secure
    • Make sure that your anti-virus and spyware software is up to date. Scammers are able to get your information by loading Trojans onto your computer and taking your information slowly and quietly without you even recognizing it.
  • Update your browser
    • Make sure that your browser is the most updated version. The reason why browsers get updated is because they are constantly updating protection to stay ahead of online scammers that are constantly changing their scamming tactics.
  • Read the privacy policy
    • Before you input your personal information into any website, make sure you know what they plan on doing with your information by reading the privacy policy. If you are unable to find the privacy policy, we recommend finding somewhere else to shop.

Now that we’ve covered what you should do when it comes to online shopping, here are a few things that you should not do.

  • Don’t give out information if you don’t know what it will be used for
    • If you don’t know exactly why your information such as your name, address, credit card number, or social security information, is being used, then don’t give it out. There is no reason why any merchant should ever request your social security information.
  • Never send payment information by e-mail
    • Do not send payment information in an email, EVER. If there has been a problem with a transaction, they will call you or refer you back to the site to re-input your payment information.
  • Don’t use your credit card online via public WiFi
    • Inputting your information on public WiFi is extremely dangerous. Also avoid using public machines such as computers at cyber cafes or libraries for your online shopping.
  • Don’t use your cellphone to make online purchases
    • Using your cell phone to make online purchases is taking a very unnecessary risk with your credit card and personal information. Cell phones lack the security necessary for protecting all of your information. We suggest sticking to browsing and selecting the items you want on your phone but saving the actual purchases for your secured computer.
  • Don’t save your credit card information in your browser
    • You should never store your credit card information for the same reason that you should never write down your pin number. It’s too risky. It makes it too easy for kids, strangers, coworkers, or whoever else may have access to your computer to use your information without your permission. Additionally, whenever your computer asks if it should save your credit card information, click no!
  • Avoid using debit cards online
    • When it comes to use your debit card online – don’t. While credit cards have protection policies that help with fraud and identity theft, debit cards don’t always come with the same protection. When it comes to debit cards, the money is almost always taken from your account immediately and it’s not always easy to get it back. Just to be safe always use a credit card.
  • Don’t blindly click on suspicious links or emails
    • Be aware. Use a great pop-up blocker to help protect you from pop-up scams. Don’t click on anything that you may not be 100% sure about. Scammers are very clever in crafting links and emails that entice you to open them and click on them.

In this day in age, it is near impossible to have a well-functioning business that doesn’t accept debit and credit cards. The “Cash Only” structure only works for small bakeries and private-owned coffee shops, and even those are beginning to look into innovative merchant services.

The Future Is Here: Innovative Merchant Services

With merchant services and payment processing solutions you are almost guaranteed an increase of sales and decrease of
costs. There are so many benefits to adding merchant services to your company. You won’t regret the investment and here’s why:

1. Ability to accept credit and debit cards

  • Hardly anyone carries cash anymore. And even if they do, it’s never much. In this day and age, debit cards and credit cards are more convenient and efficient. Adding innovative merchant services to your business will allow your customs to use their credit and debit cards to buy your product or service.

2. Money Management

  • With less cash to count, your money management process will become a whole lot easier. All debit, credit, and online transactions will be automatically organized in one place, which can allow for better analysis of your cash flow.

3. Convenience & Sales Increase

  • This is a big one. So many people have to pass up on buying products on a whim because they don’t have cash on them. When your business begins to accept debit and credit, it is virtually impossible for customers to say no to what you’re offering. Convenience, believe it or not, is a huge part of what customers view as customer service. When you have options for your customer to choose from, they are more likely to like your product and return for more.
